We’re all looking for ways to update our houses and keep up with the latest trends. It can get pretty overwhelming to wade through all those decorating ideas on Pinterest, and after a while, it is easy to throw in the towel and give up. Too many little details can turn into one tumultuous set of “Maybe I should…” renovation ideas. Let it get out of hand and before you know it you’ve got six different decorating styles involved in the living room.

Keep things simple, and you’re likely to get somewhere productive. Instead of drowning in beautiful pictures from fancy decorating magazines, follow these five simple guidelines and you will have your home looking chic and trendy in no time at all, and with as little fuss as possible.

Stick to Your Style

In the age of the internet, it is easy to get caught up in a sea of decorating styles. Art Deco, Coastal, Contemporary, Rustic, Farmhouse, English Country, French, Mid-Century Modern, Shabby Chic— how is one to choose amongst all of these appealing options? When you lean into every whim, though, it can easily begin to feel cluttered. The best way to make your home feel chic and welcoming is to pick one style and stick to it. Limit your color palette and create aesthetic guidelines that you stick to very strictly.

Add Some Greenery
Bring the outside in—that’s the best way to bring your home up a notch or two. Add a few plants and you’re off to a good start. Make sure that the plants and flowers that you select for your home coordinate with the overall theme. For a more modern look, try sculptural plants like succulents and cactus. For romantic looks, fresh flowers and potted shrubbery are highly effective.

Hang Large-Scale Art
This simple trick is one of the easiest ways to make your home appear modern and chic, even high-brow if that’s something that you’re going for. Large scale art can pull a whole room together with a brilliant color combination, or set the tone for the entire house with a beautiful statement or motif. A small photograph or painting can add some interest, but a large scale art piece can transform the entire space.  Check out Target’s home section for affordable wall art or check out amazing canvas and acrylic prints at Fotoviva Art Prints.

Streamline It
Organization is something that seems small but makes the biggest difference. Keep your drawers, cupboards, and countertops with neat stacks and plenty of open space. Fewer items cluttering your tables and chairs means a cleaner, more cohesive look for your home. Keep it simple and pare it down, only keeping what you really need.

Update Your Exterior

It’s easy to forget the exterior of your home when you spend so much time inside of it, but your outer walls are critically important to the overall appearance of the house. The experts over at Siding in Vancouver have siding contractors that know their stuff. Their siding crews are top notch, and their materials are too. With a siding company, you can install vinyl siding, cedar siding, or Hardie siding, updating the entire exterior of your home with one simple fix.
